1000 Candles Light the Night!
Honor Those Who Have Battled Cancer with Luminaria
at Relay for Life 2002!
On Friday, May 10th at 9:30pm, the Candle Lighting Ceremony will commence at the American Cancer Society's seventh annual Relay for Life. This is an 18-hour Celebration of Life at Colorado College.
Luminaria will line the inside of the track. Each Luminaria will be lit in honor of loved ones and friends who have battled cancer. Everyone is invited to attend. You do not have to be a participant in the Relay for Life to take part in this tribute. With your donation, the names of individuals you designate will be inscribed on a Luminaria and will be read over the PA system. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
To purchase a Luminaria call the American Cancer Society at 719-636-5101 or go by 1445 North Union Blvd or you can purchase them at the Relay for Life event on May 10th.
What is a Luminaria?
A Luminaria is a way of honoring cancer survivors and remembering those who have lost their battle with the disease. It is a paper sack with space on the front to write the name of the person to whom the Luminaria is dedicated as well as who it is from. A candle is placed in the sack at the Relay for Life and is displayed around the inside of the track throughout the event.
What is the Luminaria ceremony?
The Luminaria Ceremony takes place just after dark at the Relay for Life. The candles inside the sacks are lit, and the stadium's lights are turned off. Names of those who have won or lost the battle with cancer are read and the ceremony closes with a performance of a song.
