Cabela's grand opening attracts thousands

After much anticipation, the southeast's first Cabela's store opened up Thursday morning.

More than 2,500 people stood in line outside Cabela's for hours. It's the first store in Augusta dedicated to just outdoors sports and activities such as fishing and hunting.

"That's basically what I've done my whole life," said shopper Ricky Sennus, "so I've been waiting on a store like this to come here."

Robert Earnest was one of the first customers to step foot in the new store. He says it used to be frustrating shopping for outdoor sports. Now that Cabela's is in town, he says his problem is solved.

"It's really just to have a few more options for shopping and not have to go online for a lot of the things that they have here at the store," Earnest said.

Not only is the store the first of its kind in the area, but it's the first Cabela's in the southeast.

"I'm a bit surprised that it did take so long just because we do have the customer base here already. There are so many people that are into the activities," Earnest said.

Representatives with Cabela's say their research supports that.

"They did research through our catalog orders and credit cards and determined that this spot in the southeast is an area that we've had a lot of support, already a lot of customers so this decided our decision in the southeast," said Katie Duncan, Cabela's marketing manager.

Cabela's was expecting to see about 5,000 people before they closed their doors Thursday night. Employees and customers are excited to do it all again tomorrow.

Cabela's is having events and giving a special gift to the first 50 customers every day throughout the weekend.
